From Symbol to Style: The Indian Fin Flash on Watch Dials
Every independent nation carries its identity through its flag, and for India, the Tricolour is a living symbol of its hard-won sovereignty. Officially adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 22 July 1947, just weeks before independence, the Indian flag features three horizontal stripes: saffron at the top signifying courage and sacrifice, white in the middle representing peace and truth, and green at the bottom denoting fertility and growth. At its center is the navy blue Ashoka Chakra, a wheel inspired by Emperor Ashoka’s Lion Capital, symbolizing law, justice, and progress.
As the country stepped into a new era, these ideals soared beyond the ground - quite literally. After independence, the Indian Armed Forces introduced national symbols to mark their presence in the skies. Military aircraft began featuring a roundel - a circular insignia in the colors of the Tricolour on their wings and fuselage.
The fin-flash is always on the tailfin of Indian Air Force planes. You’ll see Green first when you look at the plane with the nose to your left-hand side, and Saffron first when you look at the plane from the other side on. Redditt and Quora has several theories on why the order of colours are switched, if you’re up for a late night of research.
Over time, the Fin Flash has transcended its military origins to become a potent symbol of national identity and design inspiration. By incorporating the Fin Flash into our watch dials, we at Bangalore Watch Company pay homage to this emblem, allowing wearers to carry a piece of India's rich aviation heritage on their wrists.

The Fin Flash as an Artistic Indicator
What began as a military identifier has evolved into a powerful symbol of national pride and artistic expression. Today, its striking simplicity and deep symbolism have inspired a wide range of memorabilia and collectibles that extend far beyond aviation circles.
You’ll find the Fin Flash proudly featured on everything from posters and wall art to pins, badges, and medallions. For many, these items are more than souvenirs, they're symbols of patriotism and reminders of our nation’s valor. The growing popularity of military-themed keepsakes, like magnets and enamel pins bearing the Fin Flash, reflects a broader cultural movement: one that values heritage, honors service, and celebrates India’s presence on the global stage.
At Bangalore Watch Company, the Fin Flash has found a new canvas - the watch dial. In pilot watches, this iconic motif becomes a wearable tribute to India's aviation history, blending design and symbolism in a form that’s both elegant and enduring. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, it’s a quiet, constant salute to the skies and the stories they carry.

The Fin Flash in Luxury Watch Design
It began with a simple question: how do you wear history on your wrist? At Bangalore Watch Company, the inspiration came from the MiG-21 Type 77 - India’s first supersonic fighter jet. This aircraft represented a major advancement in India’s defense capabilities and introduced a distinct visual identity.
The Fin Flash wasn’t just a military insignia. It was a symbol of sovereignty, a quiet yet powerful representation of national pride, painted on the very aircraft that flew in service of the country. We adopted the fin-flash as a defining identifier for our MACH 1 collection. For 6 years since the introduction, the fin-flash has stayed on most MACH 1 models. You can spot one from afar and enjoy the details of how nicely the colours are printed with clarity. They also pop against the dial. You’ll find it on the dial, positioned at 9 o’clock.
The rest of the watch continues that conversation with history. From the afterburner-style crown to the 3D-embossed caseback showing three MiG-21s in a V formation, every detail draws from design language rooted in the world of fighter jets. But it's that small trio of stripes on the dial that quietly grounds the watch in its inspiration - a mark that once flew on metal wings, now finding a place in mechanical timekeeping.

Why the Fin Flash Belongs on a Luxury Watch
For collectors and connoisseurs, a high-end watch is more than a tool for telling time; it’s a vessel for stories, values, and heritage. By placing the Fin Flash on the dial, the watch becomes a tribute to the Indian Air Force - not only to its aircraft, but to the bravery of the pilots who flew them and the history they helped shape.
It also brings emotional resonance. For veterans, aviation enthusiasts, or anyone moved by the symbolism of service and innovation, the Fin Flash on an Indian luxury watch offers a deeply personal connection. It transforms a finely crafted object into something richer: a piece of national narrative that can be worn, admired, and passed down.
