From Uniform to Dial

Before the early 1980s, the Indian Air Force wore khaki in the summer. Then came the shift. Sky blue entered the picture, giving the IAF a new face. The blue was chosen to represent the skies.

Today, there are 17 different uniforms that IAF officers wear. Each has its role. Among them, Uniform No. 6 is one of the most familiar. The summer working dress. Simple, disciplined, and functional. You’ll see cadets in it every day during the warmer months, carrying out duties that form the backbone of the force.

It isn’t ceremonial. It isn’t ornamental. It’s the uniform of daily work. The Mach1 Officers Blue wears its colour with the same meaning: simplicity, discipline, and functionality.

The Parade in Blue

There’s another side to the uniform, too. When officers parade, rows of crisp summer blues march in sync, turning function into spectacle. At these moments, the uniform becomes an identity. The uniform serves as a tangible symbol of what it means to be an Air Warrior.

One true event stands out. On June 17, 2023, President Droupadi Murmu reviewed the Combined Graduation Parade at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal. Cadets marched in Uniform No. 6, their light-blue shirts and navy trousers reflecting the IAF’s discipline and pride. The parade featured the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team, adding spectacular flair to the ceremony. The event highlighted the ceremonial importance of the uniform and the cadets’ dedication to the skies.

The Officer’s Blue Watch

That same discipline is built into the Officer’s Blue dial. Look closely and you’ll see a powdery texture, carrying the fresh, distinct shade of the IAF summer dress. It’s unusual for a pilot’s watch; most stick to black or grey, but it fits here. Because the Mach 1 isn’t just any pilot watch, it’s one that takes its cues directly from Indian aviation.

High-contrast numerals, just like any good pilot’s instrument, guarantee visibility. You can see a traditional triangle at the 12H position. Positioned at 9H, the Indian Fin Flash stands out on the dial. At 6H, the date window sits neatly. At 3H, the BWC logo finds its place. And the crown? Large and functional, yet inspired by an afterburner nozzle, a direct nod to the aircraft.

Flip the watch over and you’ll see three MiG-21s etched into the caseback, flying in V-formation. A tribute to India’s first supersonic fighter jet, the one that marked an era.

Inside the 40mm stainless steel case beats a Swiss Sellita movement. The hands and indices of the dial are lit with Grade A C3 Super-LumiNova, ensuring legibility in the dark. Water resistance runs to 100 m, and the overall design blends modern reliability with aviation heritage.

But beyond the specs, this is a watch with identity.

Stories told through dial colors

The Officer’s Blue is part of the larger Mach 1 story, our collection of pilot watches inspired by Indian aviation. Built with the same philosophy that connects watches and aviation, every detail carries meaning. The Officer’s Blue stands out with its vibrant dial, breaking away from the classic monochrome palette. All watches at Bangalore Watch Company are made from premium materials and carry rich stories celebrating modern 21st-century India. Each collection features dial colours thoughtfully chosen to represent the meaningful narrative behind every watch: Apogee – a collection of space watches, carries the vivid green of the Supernova, Cover Drive – a collection celebrating the spirit of Cricket, reflects the bold yellow of the cricket jersey, and Peninsula – an outdoor watch collection, draws from nature with greens inspired by forests. Officer’s Blue continues this tradition with a fresh, striking color that tells its own story.
