Sapphire Crystals in BWC Watches
At Bangalore Watch Company ™, we use sapphire crystals across all our collections, but not all sapphire crystals are the same. The shape and profile of the crystal are chosen to suit the watch’s design, function, and case geometry. Here's how we apply different types of sapphire glass across our lineup.
Superdome Sapphire Crystal in Peninsula Professional
Enter the Peninsula Professional, our outdoor watch with a case inspired by nature. Its pebble-shaped profile, melded by the elements, doesn’t follow traditional lines. It flows, curves, wraps. And so, a flat or mild dome simply won’t do.
For this, we chose a superdome sapphire crystal.
- A double-domed design curved both on the inside and outside for perfect optical clarity across a wide viewing angle.
- The consistent thickness of the dome minimizes distortion and enhances structural integrity, especially under pressure, ideal for an all-terrain companion.
- Its pronounced curve echoes the organic silhouette of the case, giving the watch a UFO-like aesthetic—modern, otherworldly, yet grounded in nature.
Double-domed sapphire crystals are among the most technically demanding components in watchmaking. Each one is cut from a solid block of synthetic sapphire, with both surfaces precisely ground and polished using diamond tools. Most of the material becomes waste, making it an expensive and labor-intensive process.

Domed Sapphire Crystal in Cover Drive and Apogee Collection
Our Apogee and Cover Drive collections both feature single domed sapphire crystals, flat on the inside, gently curved on the outside.
- This curvature adds a vintage aesthetic, echoing the charm of old-school acrylic domes.
- In the Cover Drive, it enhances the layered look of the sandwich dial, casting soft shadows that change with the angle.
- In Apogee, the dome plays beautifully with the cushion case, adding depth to the dial and complementing its mid-century inspiration.
There’s a trick with domes, though: too much curvature and you get unwanted distortion. That’s why we carefully design our domes with low curvature, enough to add character, without sacrificing readability.
Flat Sapphire Crystal in Mach 1 Collection
That’s where the flat sapphire crystal comes in.
- Being flat, it minimizes internal reflections, even without anti-reflective coating.
- And of course, it’s scratch-resistant, ready for cockpit or commute.
This crystal doesn’t distort or magnify; it simply gets out of the way. It’s ideal for a utilitarian pilot watch. If you're drawn to aviation heritage and clean design, the flat crystal on the Mach 1 is your co-pilot.

Choosing the Right Crystal
Each crystal we use flat, domed, or superdome, reflects our broader philosophy at Bangalore Watch Company™: design with intent, engineer with precision, and build with pride. Our collections from the aviation-inspired Mach 1, to the space-age Apogee, the cricket-heritage Cover Drive, and the adventure-ready Peninsula Professional are united by one purpose: to create world-class luxury watches that originate from India and stand shoulder to shoulder with the best globally. These are watches that tell stories of Indian inspiration, crafted to international standards, and made for enthusiasts around the world. Sapphire crystal is just one part of that story but an important one.
