In the 1950s, India's post-independence "Swadeshi" movement resulted in rapid industrialization. The push to a self-sufficient, globally competitive economy modeled against the Soviet system of Autarky spilled over to the watchmaking world. Companies like HMT, Hegde & Golay, and Allwyn were set up in India using technology transfer from established watchmakers from around the world. HMT in particular gained prominence among India's working class; their watches named like loving children in the family - Usha, Sindhu, Dipti, Lalit, Shreyas, Utsav, and Sangam models were once coveted for their ingenuity.
