What Does “Accurate” Mean?
In a BWC automatic watch, accuracy refers to how closely the watch keeps real time without running noticeably fast or slow. Unlike quartz watches that rely on electronic regulation, automatic watches depend entirely on moving parts working together in balance. Small variations are natural, but controlled regulation ensures the watch performs within an expected range.
The Tiny Components That Control Time
Inside every automatic watch are key components that determine accuracy. The hairspring expands and contracts at a steady rhythm. The escapement releases energy in controlled intervals. The balance wheel oscillates back and forth, dividing time into equal beats.
These parts are small, but they are responsible for how consistently your watch keeps time day after day.

What Affects Accuracy?
Automatic movements respond to their environment. Magnetism is one of the most common causes of time variation. Electronic devices such as phones, speakers, and laptops contain magnets that can disturb the balance spring, causing the watch to run fast or slow.
Temperature also plays a role. Heat expands metal components, while cold contracts them. These small changes can affect how the hairspring behaves.
Shock or impact can disturb the balance wheel or other internal parts. A fall or strong knock may cause the watch to lose or gain time, or in extreme cases, stop.
Industry Standard vs. BWC Standard
For non-certified Swiss watches, the general industry tolerance range is approximately −10 to +30 seconds per day. This is considered acceptable for mechanical movements that are not chronometer certified.

How to Maintain Accuracy
Good care supports long-term performance. Wind your watch correctly and consistently to ensure stable power delivery. When not in use, store it safely in a watch case or box to prevent accidental shocks.
Avoid placing your watch near strong magnetic sources such as electronic devices. Over time, internal lubricants naturally age, so servicing, re-lubrication, and regulation every four to five years will help maintain accuracy and overall performance.
