From Cockpits to Collections: How BWC Honors Indian Aviation

Pilot watches have a long history. Long before they became a style statement, they were built for a purpose to help aviators read the time quickly, clearly, and reliably at altitude. The German Flieger watches, Type A and Type B, set the standard. Clean dials, bold numerals, high legibility. Different brands added their own touches, their own complications, but the foundation remained the same. What was always rare, though, was a pilot watch that carried a story from aviation itself. The MACH 1 Civilian and Aviator from Bangalore Watch Company are exactly that.

What Indian Aviation Deserved

Watchmaking has long drawn from military history. Dive watches honour naval heritage. Chronographs trace back to the cockpit. Brands across the world have built entire collections around the stories of the armed forces. But Indian aviation, with decades of its own courage and milestones, never had a watch that truly represented it. The MACH 1® collection was built to change that. And within it, the Civilian and the Aviator stand as the classic pilot watches from India

The MiG-21 on the Caseback

Before the dial, there is the caseback. The MiG-21 - India's first supersonic fighter jet flew for decades before its retirement. It was a machine that defined a generation of Indian Air Force pilots. On the caseback of both the Civilian and the Aviator, three MiG-21s fly in V-formation, etched into the steel. Beneath them, the text reads India's First, along with the year the aircraft entered service. It is not decoration. It is a record.

The Civilian and Aviator Dials

Both watches follow the classic pilot watch formula, white indices against a black dial, high-contrast and immediately readable. But each takes a different direction.
The MACH 1® Civilian is designed along the lines of the Type A Flieger. It carries the Indian Air Force fin-flash at the 9 o'clock position. The winding crown draws its shape from a MiG afterburner. The numerals are cockpit-inspired and built in 3D Swiss Super-Luminova, so legibility holds through the night. It is a classic pilot watch, updated for the present. The MACH 1® Aviator Stealth takes the Type B Flieger as its reference. The same fin-flash, the same afterburner crown, the same luminous numerals, but the entire watch is encased in black PVD coating. It is tactical and modern, a watch that disappears in low light but remains fully readable when you need it. Both watches carry the V-formation MiG etching on the caseback. Both are built around a story worth wearing.

Watches That Carry a Story

The Civilian and the Aviator are part of Bangalore Watch Company's MACH 1® Collection -an aviation-inspired watch collection built around India's aviation heritage and the pilots who shaped it. The Avalanche marks the High-Altitude Edition. The Silk Scarf celebrates women in aviation. The Synchro pays tribute to India's aerobatics formation team, one of the few such teams in the world. Every watch in the series is connected to a real story from Indian skies.

At Bangalore Watch Company, that approach runs across every collection. India's cricketing passion is embodied in the cricket watch collection - Cover Drive®. The APOGEE® honours the country's achievements in space. The Peninsula draws from the landscapes that define the subcontinent. The Civilian and Aviator carry the spirit of the IAF.

When you wear either of these Indian automatic watches, you are not just wearing a watch. You are wearing a piece of Indian history. There is nothing else quite like it.
