Not Just a Pilot Watch

How often do we stop to recognise the people who fly us safely from one destination to another? April marks International Pilots Day, a moment to acknowledge the individuals behind every take-off and landing. At Bangalore Watch Company™, this is a story we have been telling through the MACH 1® collection, one that focuses not just on aviation, but on the people who define it.

The MACH 1® collection was launched in 2019 with a clear intent: to create watches inspired by Indian aviation. While pilot watches have historically been associated with European designs like the German Flieger, MACH 1® reinterprets this category through an Indian lens. It moves beyond nostalgia and brings in references from India’s aviation history, both civil and military.

A History of Pilot Watches

Pilot watches were never designed as accessories. They were built as instruments. Early pilot watches prioritised legibility, precision, and reliability. Large dials, clear indices, and luminous markings ensured that time could be read instantly, even in challenging conditions. The Type B Flieger design, with its distinct minute track from 0 to 60, became a standard for clarity in the cockpit.

These design principles continue to define pilot watches today, including those in the MACH 1® collection.

The MACH 1 Approach

MACH 1® builds on these fundamentals but introduces elements that reflect Indian aviation. The collection includes variations that step away from the traditional monochrome palette. One draws from the blue of an officer’s summer uniform. Another acknowledges women in aviation with a softer pink dial. There are also references to iconic aircraft such as the MiG-21, one of India’s earliest supersonic fighter jets, often seen flying in formation and marking a significant chapter in Indian aviation history.

The Aviator

One of the most understated watches in the MACH 1® collection is the Aviator. It follows the Type B Flieger layout, with clear 0–60 minute indices designed for precise reading. The watch maintains a uniform black aesthetic across the dial, case, and strap, staying true to the functional roots of pilot watches.

It is powered by a Swiss Salita automatic movement with a power reserve of 41 hours. The watch features a 40mm case, sapphire crystal, and 100 metres of water resistance. The dial includes cockpit-style minute markers and is treated with multiple layers of Swiss Super-LumiNova® for visibility. Subtle details like the Indian fin flash on the dial and a MiG-21-inspired caseback connect the watch to its aviation roots.

Built for Purpose

Pilot watches have always been about clarity and usability. The MACH 1® Aviator continues this approach. It does not attempt to reinterpret the category unnecessarily but instead builds on what already works, while adding context that is relevant to India.

Celebrating Contemporary India

The MACH 1® collection is part of a larger philosophy at Bangalore Watch Company™. Each collection reflects a different aspect of contemporary India. The Cover Drive ® is the only cricket watch in the world. The Apogee® focuses on space exploration and is India’s first space-qualified watch. The Peninsula captures India’s landscapes. MACH 1® brings attention to aviation and the people who make it possible.

This International Pilots Day, the focus remains on the individuals behind the cockpit. The MACH 1® Aviator is one way of acknowledging their role through an Indian automatic watch that reflects both the function and the story of flight.
